We are Charlie and Janet Russel from Auckland, New Zealand.
2017 – Vladivostok to London
Our next “To the Ends of the Earth” adventure is about to begin, this time we are riding from Vladivostok to London. Our bikes leave for South Korea in April and we fly out on 21 May to Seoul, catch the fast train to Busan to get our bikes, then ride to Donghae to catch a ferry to Vladivostok – this is the way to get bikes to Russia from New Zealand.
The family has grown somewhat over the last couple of years, with two more grandbabies on the way. It doesn’t work out for us to come back this time though with visas and time constraints.
2014/15 – The Americas – Prudhoe Bay to Ushuaia
Charlie is trying to retire from our building business and we figure the best way to do that is to go away on a motorbike trip for a few months and leave the business in the capable hands of our son-in-law, Mark.
Charlie has been riding motorbikes since he was young, but I only got my full bike license about 6 years ago. We have done a few trips around New Zealand and also in the States but this will be my first big trip overseas where I have handlebars rather than the back of a helmet, and I am looking forward to it.
For months we have been following the blogs of others who have done this trip before us on Horizons Unlimited and ADV Rider. We bought the DVD series from Horizons which we found to be really helpful to get us started. We also read their Newsletter stories to pick up tips from other riders. We found these sites so helpful for many aspects of our preparation, and so through our blog we hope to do the same for others. It is also our diary of the trip, and the way our family and friends can follow us.
Our initial plan was to ship our bikes to Vancouver, fly over on 14 July then head north to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. From there it was “turn south” and head towards Tierra del Fuego at the bottom of South America. We have travelled fairly extensively in Alaska, Canada and North and South America, so for us this trip is not so much about sightseeing, but more about enjoying the ride.
However our plan has recently changed a little as our daughter Melanie and husband Jason are due to have a baby in October, so that now means a change of priorities with a detour home in September. We will store the bikes in LA and return there in November to complete our journey.
